Original recipe card for Armour's Oat Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Armour's oats
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 compressed yeast cake
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • about 5 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Place Armour's oats in the warm water.
  2. Dissolve yeast cake in 1/2 cup lukewarm water.
  3. Add 1 1/2 cups flour to oats, then add the yeast and salt.
  4. Beat well and let rise until light.
  5. Add shortening, sugar, and enough flour to make a soft dough and knead.
  6. Let rise about one hour.
  7. Make into one large or two small loaves.
  8. Let rise again in buttered pans about one hour to double the size.
  9. Bake from 35 to 45 minutes in a moderate oven.
