Original Recipe Card
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter or substitute
- 2 cups light brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 1/4 cups Swansdown Cake Flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup sour milk
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1 1/2 teaspoons soda
- 1/2 cup or 1 1/2 squares cocoa or chocolate melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
- Cream butter, add 1 cup sugar gradually, creaming mixture thoroughly.
- Beat eggs until light and add the other cup sugar to the eggs, mixing well.
- Add this egg mixture to the creamed butter and sugar, beat thoroughly.
- Sift flour, measure, add salt, sift 3 times, then add to the first mixture alternately with sour milk.
- Into boiling water, stir soda and cocoa, add vanilla.
- Bake in 3 layers in moderate oven.
